Re: N80 software info

I've got a unbranded, unlocked, sim free N80 direct from Nokia

V3.0617.0.6
03-05-2006
RM-92
Nokia N80 (58.01)

It won't upgrade and the engineers say take it in as the firmware is not going to take :-(

My view is that if enough people make a stink about this then we've a chance of getting something done.

My recommendation is that anyone with an Orange N80 ring 150 and ask for handset faults and insist they log a call with Tech Support. They'll either get fed up of the hassle or someone in higher management will see the stats of all these open calls and question how they can close them. Either way they'll have to do something.

The phone calls and emails I've had with Orange have hacked me off royally.

Hence Why I've just registered orangeandlemons.co.uk and intend to shame Orange (primarily, but will open up for other networks and N-series) into doing something.

Re: N80 software info

just thought i'd add my two-penn'th. Ive had three handsets now, all with the usual faults.Orange handset faults have been a total waste of time but the correspondence department have been quite helpful.they have now said that if Orange cannot sort the problems with the N80 then they will do me a deal with a different handset (im looking at the SPV M3100 now).In the meantime I emailed the executive office at orange, they read the email but no repsonse as yet.Popped imto my local Orange shop yesterday who said they are not selling the N80 anymore because of the high rate of returns they've had with this particular product.Such a shame, I've always stuck with Nokia, and I know it's not all their fault cos of the Orange software that screws it up,but I'm definitely thinking of switching to a different manufacturer of handset. Why Orange won't release the v4 firmware is beyond me, don't they want customers to stay with them?

Re: N80 software info

For all those that are having slow texting problems, I installed this patch and it has solved the issue with slow messaging. This is a sms accelerator patch, since installing my N80 works like it should again!

Ahh, but that's the paradox isn't it... if Orange were prepared to issue V4 firmware then they would see their rate of faulty returns drop drastically as all the V3 firmware faults e.g. poor memory management causing frequent random reboots or 'out of memory' errors, poor bluetooth performance and major inability to use large size memory cards (1 & 2GB) to name but three glaring issues would disappear with the upgrade.

The policy of both Orange and Nokia combine to effectively prevent any Orange N80 user from legitimately upgrading to V4 firmware which is a poor show imho. :smileysad:

I guess Orange customers have to hope that Orange validate V4 N80 firmware for use on their network be it generic or Orange variant, even though they have dropped the N80 handset like a hot potato.

Re: N80 software info

Guys,

Nokia will lose nothing if you get V4.
The problem is with your N80 providers, keep pushing them to have their variant upgraded to V4

Re: N80 software info

I've also got my unbranded, unlocked N80 phone on the O2 network with this firmware:

V3.0614.0.3
11-04-2006
RM-92
Nokia N80 (58.01)

yet it still says that no new firmware is available yet.

Brilliant - ill contribute for one - the more fuss you make the more the chance of results.

I got a call back from Orange on saturday and they said there was nothing they could do at the moment. The guy said that they had a large base of N80 customers and he couldnt see them not doing the upgrade at some point, but that just felt like a fob off and anyway thats no use to us - we need a commitment and a date.

He suggested I have a word with nokia about getting the generic update as the warranty is with them anyway (he quoted me part of the orange contract which says any issues with the equipment are the responsibility of the manafactures warranty!)

Looks to me like catch 22 - Orange wont do the upgrade so are passing the buck to nokia, but they wont let us upgrade unless orange ok it.

That sounds more promising - I was wondering whether writing to the correspondence department would be worth the effort but it sounds like it could be. I tried customer care about getting a different handset but they claimed the handset doesnt have a problem that warrants changing it - unbelievable!!!

Indeed, but the choices Orange have aren't inspiring unless you wish to move away from Nokia.....

Nokia HAVE released the fix to the networks, so they have exercised their obligations by having the fix. It's now the networks dragging their heals (they must have advanced warning & copies before general release).

So there for this post seems quite abt - /discussions/board/message?board.id=smartphones&message.id=5939&query.id=150861#M5939

Yep.

Mine (58.01) updating now...

Ohhh... test mode just popped up.. Blank... Now local mode... Blank again... And finished...

Just waiting the eternity it takes for my phone to boot now... I'm all giddy... Wonder if I can run more than half a small program now...

Re: N80 software info

Just updated mine to V4! Haven't noticed any different yet apart from the extra option available when connecting to the PC via cable - Media Player??

Does anyone know what exactly the update do to the phone? Like what softwares and features have they added to v4?

Cheers!
