I did as instructed and backed up my entire phone data using PC Suite.

Then used the SW Updater on my Vodafone (UK) N70 to update to V5.0609.2.0.1.

On restoring I had everything EXCEPT my contacts restored. How can I get my contacts back?

Did you previously use hte pcsuite contacts editor? if you browse into that and say sync or update (i forget) then that will push the contacts on your pc back to your phone.

or one better, did you ever sync your phone with outlook etc?

I don't use Outlook because I use hotmail, and neither did I use the Contacts Editor because I transferred contacts from my old phone (now recycled for a charity).

I, stupidly it seems, relied on the backup and restore in PC Suite to work!

Guess I'll just have to type in all the names, numbers, addresses, birthdays, etc. all over again.

you do not need to use outlook to recieve your email - you simply use it as a place to store your contacts etc.

that way, when you move to a different manufacturer of phone you can copy your contacts across with great ease.

Are you sure your phone is now not using the sim memory? Sounds odd that the contacts would not have been backed up by Pc Suite.

I suggest you get your facts right before making an accusation like that. Check the thread I started a few days ago in the PC Suite forum - which has received a compliment for actually being a positive thread.

If many of my posts have been negative, then that is an indication of how poor Nokia's ability to listen to it's customers has become (it really does pain me to say that, having been such a loyal customer and strong fan of Nokia for many years).

It seems very strange to me to use Outlook to keep contacts for my phone only, and to have to keep a duplicate set of contacts for my email - that's not an efficient way to manage contacts.

I will try the suggestion of using the Contacts editor, and let you know the (hopefully positive) result.

P.S. I am not the only person who has reported a problem restoring contacts after a SW update - check the PC Suite forum.

YES!!!

Thanks to your suggestion ap0kalipse, all my contacts are now back in my phone.

I had to open one contact using Contacts Editor, and say send to phone. Then all my contacts re-appeared.

I am very happy now!!!

Happy to hear you gót the thing sorted out. Just a comment to the backup of contacts.

It seems that since contacts are "always on" in the phone, by this I mean that everytime you receive a call or an SMS, the phonebook provides the information about the caller or who sent the message.

When the backup is taken, the phone goes to "backup mode" and the phonebook should be released for backup. Sometimes it seems that it does not happen and the contacts are not backed up.

This is very frustrating because the contacts are more or less the most important stuff you have in you phone.
(I tell this story because it happened to me once and I has not a happy bunny eighter then)

So what I have learned to do is that I always switch of my phone and switch it back on just before I take the bakcup. It seems to have some effect on the releasing of contacts, dunno...

Then I also syncronise my contacts to Outlook and to Nokia Phone Browser/Contacts folder (well, this is kind of automatic since I use to much SMS editor that I need my contacts there.

I even used to have my contacts in SIM also, but nowaways it is empty, I feel safe with the double safekeeping I have now.
