I thought I would be a proud owner of N95, but I am very dissapointed. The hardware is excellent, but the software is total **bleep**. Has Nokia the worst computer programmers on the earth? I am myself a programmer and I know they can be written much better.
So, now I'm forced to use 3rd party software. Why Nokia doesn't make a good software, so there would be no need for 3rd party SW?
Let's see:
Image Gallery:
- When started, ALL the images on memory cards are browsed. If I have 3000 photos (taken by a normal photo camera), the browsing takes more than 3 minutes!
- No image paths can be ignored. So even the images that are used by other programs, are shown here.
- Images are sorted by date, not by filename! Who is the idiot that wrote such a stupid thing? So, I have photos, but some of them I modify on PC, so they have different date, and they are not sorted properly anymore.
- Landspace images are not auto-rotated so they are show in half a resolution, with black border at the top and at the bottom
Conclusion:
As I, and many others, have good system and well organized photos in folders and possibly numericaly prefixed filenames, we need browsing in folders like PC applications ACDSee, Irfan, etc... and sorting by filename!
Now, I don't use this stupid application, but 3rd party "Resco Photo Viewer", which does everything I want: (recursive or non-recursive) browsing only in specified folders, sorting by filename, autorotating.
Music Player:
- Songs are shown organized by ID tags, not by folders. Why is there no option to switch between this two possibilities?
- When a song is played, I see only title and artist, but no album name and other data. So, if I play randomly all the songs, and I hear a good song, I could not find where it is physically. Why is this so?
Notes:
- Stupid application, no physical files, so I could not transfer the content on the PC
Conclusion: I use DEdit, which is not perfect, but does some thing which I need.
File Manager:
- Does not show the root of Phone memory
I'm using YBrowser instead.
Web (Internet browser):
- Reloads a page when going "back"
- No tab browsing, no link info, no image info
I'm using Opera Mini instead. It is still **bleep**, but better the Nokia's browser
Calculator:
- So basic, that it is useless. No advanced operations (trigonometry, exponential...)
Barcode reader:
- Does not read EAN-13 barcodes.
Conclusion: as it only reads 2D QR codes and datamatrix codes, it should not be named "Barcode Reader", as QR and datamatrix are not barcodes anymore.
GPS:
- It takes 15-30 minutes to get signal from satellite. I normaly need less than that to find the target location without GPS. So what's the point? This is useless. I rather buy Garmin GPS, which takes less than minute.
etc, etc...
Please, people from Nokia, I want to know the reason for making so bad quality software. As the phone is (was) quite expensive, I doubt that money is the reason. If you don't have good programmers, I'm looking for the job. And there are many good programmers everywhere searching for jobs.

You might like to look at this tutorial by "psychomania" concerning "Tab browsing" here:/discussions/board/message?board.id=topfaq&message

Either you are choosing not to use "Assisted GPS" feature or it is not configured properly.

Yes, I've heard about this. But, it is quite impractical, as first I must load a page with a popup. The main reason for me using Opera Mini is, that it reduces the size of the page (as I pay per kbytes). Otherwise Opera Mini is also a bad application, as it also doesn't have link info, text copy etc...
I don't know for a good phone browser like Firefox on PC. I guess I'll have to wait for Firefox Mobile. Until then, I'm stuck with buggy and underdeveloped browsers ![]()
GPS:

I have tried with Assisted GPS on and off, but it didn't change anything. I don't find any configuration option, that can help. Is there any? I can only switch Assisted and Integrated on and off.

Hi stresslessness
I would check in "Positioning methods" that "Positioning Server" is "supl.nokia.com" and that "Access Point" is an "Internet one" from the usual choice of about four.

Wow, in fact that worked. I have it enabled, and server was already defined, but not Access Point, which was blank. Of couse my Access Points are different, and I choose the appropriate one. Now the GPS startup is much faster.
Thanks.
But still I have complaints over other bad applications, so I will not mark this as "Solved" ![]()

i know what you mean by the calculator, but a new version could be on the way, not sure if we'll ever get it in a future firmware update but it should be in newer S60 handsets.
keep your eye on the new photo app by nokia, interesting to see if they address your issues (n95 version isn't out just yet).
