Just got my N97 today, resisted playing with it for a few hours while I let it get a good charge.
AS SOON as I turned it on, for the first boot with my AT&T SIM card, the phone's backlight did not come on.
This has since happened several times after numerous reboots. I called tech support and they were totally useless. Supposedly ive been transfered to Sales but its apparently (per the hold music) the spanish version. No one has answered though.
Trying to reflash the firmware even though I already had the most recent version. Ill update if theres any change after that.

Mine hasn't crashed like that... the phone is still functioning, and you still see the screen just no backlight.
Mine is White FWIW

since you just got it, i would call nokia and have the phone exchanged. given that it costs a fortune and it is already behaving in such a fashion and there is no reason for it to behave as such, i would certainly request a exchange of the device. this device is so new only a few members on the boards have them. we still don't know what is going on with them and assistance as such is limited. the more users report issues, and the more users get the handsets it will be easier to begin trouble shooting and figuring out what to do next and whether it is a software/firmware issue or hardware one.
ps. is yours made in china as well?

you have to wait for firmware update. I wonder how nokia get away showing off there device. They use special firmware to show it off first then they get rid of the firmware n put normal firmware on when its released. why dont they just keep the speical show firmware on when releasing sim free n97. thats how nokia get customers returning there product and going for something else.
If i was a n97 owner n if i got any problems with the n97 i will get it exchanged for a diffrent one and make sure the new one works 100% if not get it replaced again...this device cost a fortune why waste money on something that dont function properly.

WOW this keeps getting worse... I too have the
"DRAFT DO NOT USE"
User guide, and its got all kinds of errors in it that make it totally useless.
Off to engadget. Nokia, you can have your cake and eat it too.
(After 2 hours trying to get through to sales, the accounting group has gone home and im now to call back monday for an exchange. Seriously go f' yourselfs.)

yes maybe there RMA'ing their device. Nokia just rush things to market asap without proper conducting a full on test. Think more users will be joining on the RMA band wagon. I always say never get a Nokia when it's first released. Just wait a month or so see how things go first.

I guess I could have spent a little more time on the backlight outage but the wife was yelling for me as the baby was upset. Tomorrow when its sunny out ill try to get a better pic (easy to reproduce unfortunantely) so people cant say im using the flash to over power the LED's.

I too has the same problem. Other than that, could not divert calls. Once the app starts, it would shut by itself and go back to main menu.
Any one else having the same problem???
