Just got my N97 today, resisted playing with it for a few hours while I let it get a good charge.

AS SOON as I turned it on, for the first boot with my AT&T SIM card, the phone's backlight did not come on.

This has since happened several times after numerous reboots. I called tech support and they were totally useless. Supposedly ive been transfered to Sales but its apparently (per the hold music) the spanish version. No one has answered though.

Trying to reflash the firmware even though I already had the most recent version. Ill update if theres any change after that.

Mine hasn't crashed like that... the phone is still functioning, and you still see the screen just no backlight.

since you just got it, i would call nokia and have the phone exchanged. given that it costs a fortune and it is already behaving in such a fashion and there is no reason for it to behave as such, i would certainly request a exchange of the device. this device is so new only a few members on the boards have them. we still don't know what is going on with them and assistance as such is limited. the more users report issues, and the more users get the handsets it will be easier to begin trouble shooting and figuring out what to do next and whether it is a software/firmware issue or hardware one. 

ps. is yours made in china as well?

Sadly its a made in China POS like the iPhone apparently. Im trying to get it replaced and seem to be on hold hell... anyone got a better number to call?

no no no, please do not misunderstand me. i am curious as i am currently waiting for my n97 to arrive. it does not matter where the phone is made. nokia has several factories around the world and all phones are made to the exact same specs and standard worldwide, so that is not my concern. i was just curious where these were made. i have four nokia phones, three of them were made in china, only one of them was made in finland, and it gave me the most headache so really dont get upset or have some irrational belief that made in china is a POS.

Well I hope your phone arrives ok. The track record for made in china N97's seems bad so far.

I have this **bleep** issue also.  The phone starts fine...it's just when the autolock is on, I have to unlock, lock, unlock to get it to light up.  Even opening up the keypad, the screen doesn't light up the first time.  Very annoying.  I asked Nokia sales about doing an exchange and they said i would end up forfeiting my 454 sale price because i would have to repurchase at full price to do an exchange.  Others are reporting the same issue on HowardForums, but doesn't seem as though it's a wide case, which means it's a few bad batches, meaning possible hardware problem.  Hopefully a firmware update can fix this.

you have to wait for firmware update. I wonder how nokia get away showing off there device. They use special firmware to show it off first then they get rid of the firmware n put normal firmware on when its released. why dont they just keep the speical show firmware on when releasing sim free n97. thats how nokia get customers returning there product and going for something else.

If i was a n97 owner n if i got any problems with the n97 i will get it exchanged for a diffrent one and make sure the new one works 100% if not get it replaced again...this device cost a fortune why waste money on something that dont function properly.

I don't know why but its absolutely impossible to get ahold of phone sales today... maybe everyone is RMA'ing their N97's. Guess this is another Xpress5800 launch!

User guide, and its got all kinds of errors in it that make it totally useless.

Off to engadget. Nokia, you can have your cake and eat it too.

(After 2 hours trying to get through to sales, the accounting group has gone home and im now to call back monday for an exchange. Seriously go f' yourselfs.)

yes maybe there RMA'ing their device. Nokia just rush things to market asap without proper conducting a full on test. Think more users will be joining on the RMA band wagon. I always say never get a Nokia when it's first released. Just wait a month or so see how things go first.

I guess I could have spent a little more time on the backlight outage but the wife was yelling for me as the baby was upset. Tomorrow when its sunny out ill try to get a better pic (easy to reproduce unfortunantely) so people cant say im using the flash to over power the LED's.

wow this sounds like the 5800 launch or even worse. and i too have a chance of getting the 'draft' device. how sad is that. and really nokia did not shine yet again and they have a perfect opportunity to do so. so sad for me booooo

Using my LCD Monitor and a Flashlight in the other I was able to get two images of the home screen with no backlight.

I too has the same problem. Other than that, could not divert calls. Once the app starts, it would shut by itself  and go back to main menu.

Any one else having the same problem???

I also have the same problem with the backlight not coming back after locking and idling for about 10 seconds.  The backlight wont come back on unless I lock, and unlock the device.  Very annoying even happens when receving calls also,  I have to unlock and lock then unlock then pick up.  As for diverting calls,  I have the same problem diverting to my work phone, but I dont get booted to the main menu the phone become unresponsive or restarts.
