Turns out they are aware of the map issue. It is caused (maybe not in all cases, but in my case) because NOKIA has bugs in handling my localisation, to be more precise - the language settings create this issue.
I was asked to switch the language to English (which restarted my phone), open OVI maps (works ...), then close OVI maps, switch the language back to my local (Latvian in my case) and open Ovi maps again. This way OVI maps works. Obviously something was changed in some configuration files by switching languages and that triggered OVI maps to work again.
Maybe this is useful for non-English localizations ;o)
This not solve the problem either. I tried this and the phone keeps crashing when you go into weather.

This change of language setting:
-> to English-start Ovi Maps Navigation/Close the application-change to my original language -> worked for me, finally!
I have model 5230 and suddenly last week, navigation started crashing after it had been working fine. I had latest maps version 3.03 already installed and it was working, don't really know why the crashing started.
Anyway, only found this solution after trying several other methods mentioned in other discussion here, including resetting factory setting. But happy that maps are operational again, thanks!

None of the solutions in this thread worked for me. I managed to start working again with the Ovi maps 3.0.3 application by hitting upper right corner accounts as soon as the application started, then removing the account (Ovi account, it will be remove locally from the phone only), that stopped the automatic synchronization of the favourites.
Then I went to Menu -> Tools -> Synchronization, changed that from start/stop to Manual.
Restarted the application and voilà, no problems. Back to Accounts again, typed in my Ovi account credentials. Went to the favourites, tried manual synchronization and it worked! Restarted again the application and experienced no problems.

This worked for me it seems. The trick was to go into OFFLINE mode before starting MAPS... This gave me more time before the crash to log out of my Ovi account. After signing in again everything seems to be going ok.
Thanks for the great help from this forum.

Hi all,
had the same problem on a N97 device (fw 21.0.045)... and was able to fix it by using canne's solution (thanks a lot!):
-setting the phone to offline
-starting ovi maps, tapping on accounts and deleting the account from the phone, closing ovi maps
-activating any online profile
-starting ovi maps again - everything works and the application doesnt turn off by itself anymore...
it seems the problem was being caused by ovi maps trying to log into ovi.com on start-up... and me changing the access password on the internet... confronted with such a delicate situation, ovi maps doesnt ask for the new password, it just shuts down! :-)
oh, by the way, setting the positioning server (was changed by my operator to supl.vodafone.com= positioning took ages) to supl.google.com caused my phone to crash (with the screen displaying several "interesting" colors before turning completely black) every time I started ovi maps... supl.nokia.com works fine.
cheers

Hi Everyone,
I have successfully fixed the Ovi Maps crashing problem on my Nokia 5800. I am going to share with you how and I hope this works for you as well.
LIke most of you, I tried re-installing Ovi maps through Ovi Store, downloading the .sis file, and through NSU. All failed - the device kept restarting. Sometimes it would work for one day and the next day device restarts again. But, it has been almost a week now ...no crash. So, here it is:
1. Set your phone in 'Remove E: memory card mode' and remove the card (we will put it back in step 9)
2. Open Ovi Maps. It will warn that no memory card is found, phone memory will be used. Select OK.
3. Select 'Accounts'...and enter your Nokia account information
4. Go to 'My Position'. Wait till the application pinpoints your location.
5. Exit Maps
6. Restart phone, Open Maps
7. Maps will login to your Nokia account
8. Click on 'My Position' and wait a few seconds - it shouldn't crash
8. Exit Maps
9. Insert memory card back in the phone
10. Open Maps - it will now use the memory card
That's all I had to do and now it doesn't crash for me.
The previous proposed solution of setting phone to offline and entering nokia account didn't work for me - Maps kept complaining the account information cannot be entered without being online!
I have firmward v30, device type RM-428.
Cheers! Can't wait for the Nokia N8 to come out!!

seems that the new maps dont work with the old CITIES folders.
if only nokia knew this lol
NOT TRUE .
If you download the new maps and do not follow the instructions to delete old maps not folder then you can get conflicts as you have two lots of data in the cities folder.

(and ur suggestion to turn off wifi positioning was ludicrous....as it was neither the cause or solution to the problem)
Thats the problem with so many Nokia users they dont actually want advice from other users just a whine .
The advice given re turn of WI-Fi is plastered all over this site in reference to maps problems after V5 update .
So as its one of the possible solutions to the problem did you not want possible solutions .
This is not Nokia its a user to user help forum and all you want is to abuse soomebody trying to help .

Although I've fixed the maps problem now, I must say it is quite annoying when the device crashes everytime you start Maps.
I hope Nokia comes with a permanent solution soon (if they haven't already).
ktv3, I'm glad deleting cities folder did the trick for you. I had tried it too but the problem returned in 3 days.

I did the following to fix the crash issue.
1. Uninstall Maps
2. Use File Manager, navigate to E: and remove the CITIES folder entirely.
3. Get the latest Ovi Maps through s/w update, and install it
Please remember to download the maps for your cities as needed.
Works like a charm, and it doesn't crash even if wi-fi positioning is on. Thanks very much for everyone who has shared their experiences and suggestions.

Well my Ovi Maps 3.03 worked fine till I upgraded to 3.04. Now after 3 seconds starting the Map app the 5800 crashes and restarts. It seems to not crash if I'm offline, but little point using it.
I've tried to delete the cities folder, remove and install the map app to no avail.
The app is broken, and I've decided to not use it anymore till Nokia release a fix.
Google Maps will have to do for now.

Hmm... it's working now - deleted the cities folder and qf file and disabled wifi positioning method... does not crash when I go to my location!
