E90 is a dissapointment

Bought the long awaited E90 2 days ago and sold it off yesterday. In functionality it is a step or two down from a 9300i. I've gone back to the latter.
The worst feature is that searching in Contacts can only be done by first & last names only. This is incomprehensible and a deal breaker. What happened to searches by company, profession etc?

In the Psion, which I was used to, searches could be made by sections within names. This was especially useful in my home language because names often have prefixes.

I have 2 suggestions:
1) As an aside, one of the Psion 3's had a feature which i loved but was discontinued in which you could put your calender in 'List View'. This enabled you to see succesive appointments in the same view regardless of the time gap between two sequential.

2) Finally, I have a suggestion: Can the birthday label under contacts be designed to connect with the calendar birthday function.

I hope this is not the end of the Communicator as we know it

Re: E90 is a dissapointment

There is a in-device search application in the office folder which can thawl through your messages, mail, calender events, to-dos, notes, contacts and other files. And there is also a downloadable search v3.6 for E90 which can probe for example company names or professions. I agree with you these functions should be integrated right in the contacts search. There's too many in-device search engines available.

Hello Mobilover,

Thanks a trillion for this. I'll pass this around to other dissapointed friends.

Re: E90 is a dissapointment

E90 must be seen like an S60 device with big screen, nothing else. Is not an S80 software with all good (and weak) points.
But the decision was made by Nokia, and say goodbye to S80...

Thanks. Will try it. I had tried the search facility in the Office folder and it was really slow and therefore not usable often

Hello Mobilover,
Could you please send the link for the v3.6 search software?
Thanks

The Mobile Search for E90 is downloadable in the Download! application in the main manu. It might use the very same search engine the one in the office folder use and if you consider it slow I think that Mobile Search isn't any faster. Although mine does a complete search in about ten seconds (61 contacts) I still find this very useful. Just unselect search criteria to get a bit faster results.

Thanks. Guess mine was slow because I have over 2000 contacts. This phone is a real pity though.

Re: E90 is a dissapointment

Okay. I have over 2000 contacts which explains snail like search.

I started this with the Psion 3, 3a 5, Revo, 9210, 9210i, 9500 then 9300 and 9300i. Now I have to abandon ship and now examining the Treo & windows based phones for an upgrade. Pity about the E90 phone.
Again, thanks a trillion for your help.

Re: E90 Search Engine

The E90 is a great smartphone, if not THE greatest smartphone currently available on the market. Yes, it isn't perfect, due to the usage of the Symbian S60 3rd OS, the E90 seems to be more like a N95 with keyboard and larger display. However I'm still confident that after eliminating some bugs with the last FW update, Nokia will start to offer a couple of improvements and new functions incl. programs which are targeted to the business user.

If Nokia leaves the E90 OS like it is now, many people will be pretty disappointed, especially people who really need to work with the E90.

I love my E90 (I have two of them) but the first quality issues and the current S60 3rd OS status are a disappointment for me. The E90 itself is fun but Nokia should improve it substantially over the next couple of months with a HUGE FW Update introducing new features and improvements.

Re: E90 Search Engine

Firstly when I check "downloads" available from my main menu..there is no mention of "search" application.
It lists those I already know such as global race, world mate etc.
The reason I would like to have the ability to search by "job function" is I cannot remember the name of everyone of my contacts and if I want to find the "Quality Manager" at "Nokia" "Salo"..none of those key words are available via Contacts normal search.

Secondly..my E90 is behaving quite well so I dont need to phone him..yet..I can go knock on his/her door though..!!

Thirdly..I am not at all disappointed ...but after the 9300 it takes a bit of getting used to..S60 3rd edition is very different..but the speed of the E90 removes any doubt in my mind that this was the way to go for me.

Lastly...in this post anyway..
Is there anyway I can get a/some plastic film protector for the internal display? I seem to spend a lot of time wiping off grease that gets from the key board/fingers onto the screen as the keys appear to actualy touch the screen when the case is closed.
I am in Finland and I asked the TeliSonera phone shop they said they would ask Nokia....so will I.

Re: E90 is a dissapointment

With Nokia Phones, only buy the "debugged i-Version" and never the first release.

Re: E90 is a dissapointment

There are a few other downgraded features compared with the 9300i.
1) You cannot schedule when text messages go out
2) In contacts, you cannot put in phone numbers with spaces which is terrible when you have long numbers
3) You do not have the option to include original text in a reply

Re: E90 is a dissapointment

After extensive searches and tests:
1) There SEARCH engine on the web. I'll post the link. It is quite powerful. You can try to google it. It's called 'searchS60_3rd.sisx.
It can even call up middle portions of a search string.

2) There is a lovely calender add on that makes the calender work like God intended. It is called papyrus and can be found on www.sbsh.net. You can even get a list view like one of the early Psion 3s.

The question is why do we need all these add ons when these facilities were available years ago on older equipment. We all beg that nokia not go back

Re: E90 is a dissapointment

Teetom - I'm new to these boards but have an E90 on order from Vodafone Business. Please confirm that your 'tweaks' suggested actually work on the E90 so:
1. You CAN search contacts from various fields in the contact card without taking forever. (I have about 2000 contacts)
2. You can use the calendar like on the earlier Communicator series.
Like you I've had all the earlier Communicators and find them a great business tool. Unfortunately Vodafone won't replace my 9300i if it crashes again so I've got to upgrade soon.

Re: E90 is a dissapointment

Mhhh - exactly what it is, a dissapointment.

For example I try to get a GPS map loaded down, wait for half an hour and nothing happens :-(

The keys are so hard to press that even a SMS is a work you twice think over - not to mention the 'joystick' beeing so narrow to the delete - key and the enter key . This thing is designed for business people and not for little girls.

Big dissapointment is the foto feature to ´be combined with contacts: they are so tiny that you maybe can tell people from buildings but not Mr Wang Lian from Mr Wang Liu. Each girly Nokia comes with a full screen foto of the caller, why not that high end tool?
